China’s TD-SCDMA 3G Technology

Time Division-Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access, or TD-SCDMA, is a 3G mobile telecommunications standard, going to be implemented in Republic of China by the Chinese Academy of Telecommunications Technology (CATT), Datang and Siemens AG.

TD-SCDMA is China’s home-developed 3G standard. The government has strongly backed the standard in an attempt to reduce China’s reliance on expensive foreign technology. There were bugs initially in the TD-SCDMA 3G standard. Those bugs were ironed out by the experts. So China going to implement their 3G standard and the major cell phone producers already announced their products which will be supporting this 3G standard.

According to research firm "Analysys International", The market for TD-SCDMA equipment reached $910m in the first quarter of 2007. The whole amount is spent over the infrastructure developement now.

But the 3G handsets are not available yet in China.

Local firms such as ZTE and Datang are guiding TD-SCDMA sales with 46.3 per cent and 26.8 per cent of the market respectively.

Huawei,China’s largest mobile manufacturer and Nokia and Siemens, Europe made a joint venture called TD-Tech which holds a market of 14.8 percent in TD-SCDMA 3G standard.

World’s largest mobile carrier, China Mobile, which recently given out TD-SCDMA infrastructure contracts for six major cities, including Beijing and Tianjin, which both have populations over 10 million.

Trial networks based on the foreign W-CDMA and CDMA2000 3G standards were established last year, and are still awaiting government approval to start public operation.

Nokia alrady announced a research facility in Tsinghua University ,Beijing to catalyse the implimentation of the new 3G standard.

3G In or Out

Its been awhile we started hearing about the plans about implementing the so-called-new 3G technology in India. But it never showed up.

But the wait is almost over. Now it's time to change. In fact the facet of India is going to change in the coming months with the implementation of 3G networks by Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL), Reliance Communications and Tata TeleServices Ltd. As India's mobile market has exploded in recent years to more than 170 million users, and as seven mobile operators compete for that growing customer base, spectrum space has gotten tighter and the quality of service has diminished. To encounter this situation, last year the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India began looking into offering third generation, or "3G", mobile services in India.

Our neighboring countries such as China,Korea and Japan had already changed to new 3G spectrum a long time time ago. They are the leaders in the area of 3G now other than USA and European Union. Korea had offered India to tie up with the implementation of 3G technologies. The success of Korea was from CDMA implementation which handed over the technology to 3G from 1993.

But the major drawbacks in implementing 3G India include,

1. The price of the mobile handsets with 3G capability is high.
2. Network upgradation under processing.
3. Special 3G contents yet to be available.
4. There exist a cold war between the 3G and Wi-max technology.

The generation gap was there. But BSNL started a plan to implement 3G with starting from Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh which will end up in high speed data transmission channels in the state. Later it will be available in all over the country. Indian govt finally gets its 3G and broadband act together to get away the interference from Wi-max.

While all the leading mobile phone producers like Nokia, Sony Ericsson, samsung,LG etc eye India to be their playground for coming years, the competition is going to tighten up.
Let's hope it will end up in the value for money technology for the cusrtomers.
